Community In Action

Creating Meaningful Change Locally

As a mutual, giving back isn’t just something we do—it’s who we are. Thanks to the support of our savers, we’re able to invest in local projects and initiatives that make a real difference. Together, we’re creating stronger communities and meaningful change where it matters most.

From Savings to Community Impact

MHBS donates £60,000 to new Community Hub

We’re proud to support the launch of the Bell Street Community Hub in Wigston with our longstanding partner, Leicester South Foodbank (LSFB). This vibrant space is designed to boost well-being, connection, and purpose for local residents, offering face-to-face support, accessible services, and a flexible schedule of workshops, events, and activities.

Through multi-agency collaboration and tailored one-on-one advice, the hub provides a welcoming, inclusive environment that responds directly to community needs—perfectly reflecting our commitment to building stronger communities.

2.2 Million Invested in Affordable Homes for Local Families

Since 2023, we’ve invested £2.2 million into our affordable homes programme, an initiative believed to be unique in the UK. So far, we’ve purchased seven homes to provide affordable rent for those most in need, including three in Lutterworth and, most recently, four new homes at Wellington Place in Wigston following a further £1.1 million investment.

This ongoing commitment helps local families secure a safe, happy place to call home and reflects our dedication to supporting communities where it matters most. This commitment continues into our future projects as we look to refurbish our Market Harborough Branch to further support our community.

£1,000 Savings Initiative Led by Members for Community Impact

Through our Thrive £1,000 Savings Initiative, every saver has the chance to turn saving into giving. Each month, one member nominates a charity to receive a £1,000 donation, supporting causes that matter most to our community.

From Marlow House to Wooden Spoon and Stoke Albany Village Hall, every donation tells a personal story and creates real local impact. It’s proof that your savings don’t just grow—they help communities thrive.

Voices from the Community

“VASL Community Champions has used Newcombe House to host training for our digital volunteers, and for team meetings. We find the facilities excellent and have always enjoyed a warm welcome. We appreciate having access to such a professional working space.”
Rohini Corfield, Voluntary Action South Leicestershire (VASL)

“With the support from Market Harborough Building Society, the work of the team in getting us established in our new home has been amazing. They have gone far beyond what was expected, and we are so grateful.”
Bruce Harrison, Leicester South Foodbank.

“We’re incredibly grateful for this support. It’s heartening to know that our work resonates with the community and that we’ve left an impression on the winning customer so that they nominated us. This £1,000 will make a real difference. Whilst we already have a range of games, and activities that our clients have the opportunity to enjoy, we want to spend the money on further increasing the range of activities, speakers and events we are able to offer, and this donation will enable us to do so.”
Diane White, Centre Manager at Marlow House.

Community Fund

Earlier in 2025, we launched our new Community Fund in partnership with the Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation. This fund is dedicated to empowering local initiatives, supporting grassroots projects, and fostering a spirit of togetherness.

By addressing community challenges head-on, we aim to create lasting, positive change where it matters most, reflecting our commitment to making a real difference in the communities we serve.

Newcombe House: A Community Hub

Community is at the heart of everything we do. When we opened our new head office, Newcombe House, we wanted it to be more than just a workplace.

We envisioned a shared space where charities, small businesses, and local groups could come together to collaborate and grow. That vision has become reality. Since opening, we’ve welcomed over 5,000 visitors to our community hub.

What started as a meeting venue has evolved into a vibrant space for interviews, workshops, kids home education session, cookery classes, Business meetings, hot desking, and even a break from working from home.

It’s proof that when we put social purpose first, incredible things happen.

Interested in using our space?   We’d love to hear from you!
