150 Years Strong
A milestone year
2020 marks the society’s 150th year. We were founded to encourage savings and make home buying accessible for local people. These pillars of Victorian responsibility still guide us today as a mutual member owned business.
Our roots are in Market Harborough and our first formal meeting was held in the Corn Exchange, after which for two years we met in the iconic Old Grammar School on the High Street. Then, in 1872, our office moved to the New Hall, Sheep Market (rented for 2/6d a night but – heating and lighting was provided). These fortnightly meetings were to collect subscriptions from members. We still hold the ledgers, all elegantly completed in copperplate handwriting.
In 1879 the well-known J W Newcombe was appointed as Secretary (now known as Chief Executive) and it was then we acquired our first offices on St Mary’s Road. This “branch” was our first.
The town of Market Harborough grew and shifted towards the vibrant diversified centre it is today. The Society has welcomed new members and provided many a mortgage in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.
Today we have six branches all local to Market Harborough, in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Our Head Office is Welland House right in the centre of the town. We employ around 120 staff and have grown to more than £530m in assets and £43m in reserves. In our 150th year we were delighted to win the Harborough Business of the Year award.
We have always looked for ways to support the local community and our Charitable Foundation has made grants of almost £300,000 since it was created. If you have a good cause seeking support visit our Charitable Foundation webpage for more details.
Because of lockdown 2020 has not been the 150th celebration we planned but we look forward to welcoming new members and seeing old friends soon.
